Facebook Chef Encouraging Thousands To Have Fun With Cooking

Since being put into a state of lockdown many people, especially parents, have been trying to find fun ways to keep entertained. Chef Redfern had the idea to create a public group on Facebook called 'Lockdown Cooking at Home with Red Redfern'. On here Chef Redfern and his Wife post recipes regularly for both adults and children, and then later on go live (also on Youtube for those who do not have Facebook) so that it can be made together.

In the group the name Melanie Jane Huggins popped up a lot, posting pictures of her kids' work. When speaking to Melanie it was realised that the Chef is actually her children's Great Uncle who lives in Spain. When asked about the group and what its doing for her and her family, here is what she had to say:

"When I learnt of the seriousness of the virus, being left on my own with two children I started making lists of things to do. I searched books, internet and Facebook for tips and ideas to entertain them as I knew school work would not be enough. One day on Facebook an invite came through for a cooking group by the kids' Uncle, I knew my daughter, 13, loved baking so I figured she would enjoy this and gave it a try. Never did I imagine that my son, 10, would be more interested than my daughter was. My son had quite a bad relationship with food so his new found interest made me very hopeful. As the videos was going live and my son got to follow along with his Uncle and create unbelievably amazing, tasty food, his interest grew. He laps up praise from home, his Uncle praises him on the live videos, and even other chefs have commented on how well he is doing. He gives me a list every week of ingredients that he will need, and even with cut up fingers from his new knife set he stands in the kitchen with all of his ingredients prepared eagerly waiting for his Uncle Chef Redfern to go live."

Melanie then went onto explain how this has refreshed her sons relationship with his Uncle as due to the distance they rarely get to see each other, but it has given him a new love of food. It was also mentioned that whilst finding his passion for cooking, the traditional school work has taken a "backseat, but in these uncertain times his health and happiness is more important, but at least he is stimulating his brain with something!"
